The School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Sheffield, in partnership with the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), is offering a fully funded 3.5-year PhD studentship on Resilient Federated Learning for Autonomous Systems under Distribution Shifts.

This interdisciplinary project focuses on developing resilient AI and Federated Learning (FL) algorithms for autonomous systems operating in dynamic environments. The research integrates Machine Learning, Robotics, AI Safety, Information Theory, Control Systems, Human-in-the-Loop AI, and Distributed Intelligence to improve the reliability of drone swarms, mobile robots, and sensor networks in safety-critical applications.

💰 Funding

✔ Fully funded 3.5-year PhD ✔ Tax-free stipend: ~£25,000/year (subject to annual inflation) ✔ Full Home tuition fees ✔ Research, training, and conference support

👥 Eligibility

Applicants should hold a First-Class or strong 2:1 Bachelor's degree and/or a Master's degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Control Systems, Robotics, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, or a related discipline.

Strong knowledge of probability, linear algebra, optimization, and programming in Python and/or MATLAB is essential. Experience in Machine Learning, Federated Learning, Reinforcement Learning, Robotics, or Information Theory is highly desirable.
